The 11 times table

For 11 × 1 through 11 × 9, the digits repeat: 11 × 4 = 44, 11 × 7 = 77. That pattern is reliable only for single-digit multipliers. From 11 × 10 onward the rule changes — 11 × 10 = 110, 11 × 11 = 121. Teach the repeat trick for the easy facts, then partition for harder ones: 11 × 12 = 11 × 10 plus 11 × 2. Link to the 10s and 12s. Children often learn 11 × 11 first from square numbers; build the rest of the table around that anchor.

Worked example

For 11 × 7, the 7 repeats: 11 × 7 = 77. For 11 × 12, use 11 × 10 = 110 plus 11 × 2 = 22, giving 132 — the repeat trick does not apply here.

Watch for this

Using the repeat rule for 11 × 12 and writing 1212 or 1112 is the main error. Say clearly: 'Repeat digits only works up to ×9.' Beyond that, partition.
