The 12 times table

Twelve is a dozen — eggs, months in a year — so the context is familiar. Build from the 6s by doubling: 6 × 5 = 30, so 12 × 5 = 60. Build from the 10s and 2s: 12 × 7 = 10 × 7 plus 2 × 7 = 70 + 14 = 84. Square 12 × 12 = 144 is worth knowing as an anchor. This table supports division and fractions later, so fluency here pays off. Mix with 6s and 10s in practice so children see 12 as ten plus two, not a new unrelated set.

Worked example

For 12 × 5, double the 6s fact: 6 × 5 = 30, so 12 × 5 = 60. For 12 × 7, split into 10 × 7 = 70 and 2 × 7 = 14, total 84.

Watch for this

Only knowing 12 × 12 = 144 and guessing everything else is common. Drill the splits — ten plus two of each factor — so the whole table is reachable, not just the square.
