The 7 times table

The 7s are the table most children meet without a tidy pattern. Build from facts they already know: 7 × 5 from the 5s, 7 × 10 minus 7 for any stuck fact. Square numbers help — 7 × 7 = 49 is a useful anchor. Some children learn 7 × 8 = 56 as a rhyme; that is fine if it does not replace understanding. Partitioning works: 7 × 6 = 7 × 5 plus one more 7. There is no shortcut for the whole table, so spaced repetition and honest links to 5s, 10s, and squares matter more than a gimmick.

Worked example

For 7 × 8, use 7 × 7 = 49 as the anchor. One more 7 makes 56, so 7 × 8 = 56. Alternatively, 7 × 5 = 35 plus 7 × 3 = 21 also gives 56.

Watch for this

Guessing small numbers — saying 7 × 8 = 48 or 54 — because seven feels 'medium sized'. Compare to nearby facts: 6 × 8 = 48, so 7 × 8 must be bigger.
