The 10 times table

Multiplying by 10 shifts place value: the digits stay in order and a zero appears in the ones column. 10 × 6 = 60, not 16. Use base-ten blocks or a place-value chart so children see tens growing, not ones being added. The 10s table is the bridge to multiplying multiples of 10 later — 10 × 10 = 100 opens hundreds. Link to money: ten 10p coins make £1. This table should feel easy, but only if place value is understood; otherwise children treat ×10 as 'add a zero' without knowing why.

Worked example

For 12 × 10, keep the 12 and put a zero in the ones place: 12 × 10 = 120. On a place-value chart, 12 becomes one hundred and twenty.

Watch for this

Writing 12 × 10 = 102 or adding 10 to get 22 shows place value has not clicked. Go back to blocks: twelve tens, not twelve plus ten.
