One foot always down

Why Is a Scooter Easier Than a Bike?

A scooter is easier to learn than a bicycle because you can put a foot down without falling, and never have to balance blind.

A bicycle Both feet committed, seat high upA scooter Standing low, onefoot free
The difference is what happens when it goes wrong.
  1. Step 1 of 5

    Balancing is constant small correction.

It starts to tip The ridersteersunderneath it Upright again Repeat, several timesa second

Any two-wheeler falls over unless it is steered back under its own weight, many times a second. Learning to ride is learning to make those corrections without thinking.

  2. Step 2 of 5

A free foot is an instant correction.

The scooter tips The free footlands, and it isover

On a scooter one foot is already off the deck, so a wobble ends with a step rather than a fall. The penalty for getting it wrong is almost nothing.

  3. Step 3 of 5

Standing low means falling less far.

On a bicycle saddleHigh, and tipsquicklyOn a scooter deckLow, and tipsslowly

A scooter rider's weight sits just above the deck rather than on a saddle. A lower centre of mass tips more slowly, giving more time to react.

  4. Step 4 of 5

    Small wheels are the trade.

Wheel sizeSmall: nimble, easy to startSmall: every bump is a jolt

Little wheels turn easily and steer sharply, but they drop into every crack. A scooter is nimble at walking pace and dreadful on a rough road.

  5. Step 5 of 5

    Pushing is the whole engine.

    1 One leg pushes2 It rolls,losing a littleto friction3 Push again

Each push puts energy in and every roll takes some out through friction and air. A scooter is efficient at low speed and hopeless at high, which is why it is a short-trip machine.

Electric scooters keep the low stance and the small wheels, which is why they are so much harder to control on a pothole than they look.

The short version

A scooter is easier to learn than a bicycle because standing low with a free foot turns every wobble into a step instead of a fall.

Try it yourself

Stand on one foot, then on one foot on a chair. Height alone makes balancing harder.
