What Is Friction?
Every surface is rough up close. Rubbing those roughnesses together is what slows you down.

Moving things stop for a reason.
A rolling ball does not run out of go. Something has to take its energy away — and on Earth that something is nearly always friction.

No surface is truly flat.
Magnify polished glass and you see hills and valleys. Slide two surfaces together and their peaks catch, dig and grind.

Friction turns movement into heat.
The energy does not vanish. Catching and releasing at those tiny peaks shakes the atoms harder, and shaking atoms is exactly what heat is.

Press harder and it grips harder.
More weight pushes the peaks deeper into each other, so friction rises. A heavy box is harder to slide than a light one on the same floor.

It is a problem and a gift.
Friction wastes energy in engines, so we oil them. But without it your shoes would not grip, brakes would not brake, and knots would come undone.
Rubbing your hands warm is friction you can feel — motion converted straight into heat.
