Why Are Heavy Things Hard to Stop?
Momentum combines how heavy something is with how fast it moves, and stopping it takes time and force.

Two things decide how hard stopping is.
How much matter is moving, and how fast it is going. A light thing moving quickly and a heavy thing moving slowly can be equally awkward.

Stopping means taking all of that away.
Bringing something to rest requires removing every bit of its momentum, and the only way to do that is to push against it for a while.

Force and time trade against each other.
The same stop can be a big force briefly or a gentle force for longer. What cannot change is the total of force multiplied by time.

That is what every safety device exploits.
Airbags, crash mats and bent knees all lengthen the stop. The momentum is unchanged, but the force at any instant is far smaller.

In a collision, momentum moves between objects.
Nothing is lost when things hit. What one object loses another gains, which is why a struck ball flies off as the striker slows.
Bending your knees on landing can extend the stop from a hundredth of a second to a tenth, cutting the peak force tenfold.
The short version
Momentum combines mass and speed, and since stopping needs force applied over time, spreading the stop out is what makes it survivable.
Try it yourself
Catch a ball with stiff arms, then again by drawing your hands back. The second catch stings far less for exactly this reason.
