Frosty Fun in the Snow

Once upon a time, not long ago,
A little girl went out to play in the snow.
She bundled up warm, head to toe,
And off she went with a smile, all aglow.

She wiggled her toes inside her boots,
And felt the soft snow under her foot.
She ran around with a laugh and a hoot,
And soon found herself with a snowball to shoot.

She picked it up and aimed with her arm,
And let it fly, with all her charm.
It hit her friend's cheek, but did no harm,
And they both giggled and danced in the storm.

But then, she opened her mouth to sing,
And soon discovered a problem within.
The snowflakes landed on her tongue like a sting,
And made her shiver and shake and spin.

She shook her head and covered her ears,
Trying to block out the snowflakes' cheers.
But they kept falling, causing her tears,
And she knew it was time to go home, she feared.

She wiped her chin and said goodbye,
To her friend, the snow, and the endless sky.
She'd be back tomorrow, no need to cry,
And they'd play again, with a wink of the eye.

So remember, my dear young friends, when it's cold,
To bundle up tight, before you go out to behold
The wonders of nature, with your stories to be told,
And your cheeks rosy red, like the sun, so bold.

Reflections

Here are some questions you can ask kids to help them think about the poem:

  1. What do you think the little girl felt when she first went outside to play in the snow?
  2. What did the little girl use to throw the snowball at her friend's cheek?
  3. How did the snowflakes make the little girl feel when they landed on her tongue?
  4. What did the little girl do to protect herself from the snowflakes?
  5. What do you think the little girl learned from her experience playing in the snow?
