Your brain saw it coming

Why Can't You Tickle Yourself?

Your brain predicts the touch of your own hand and dampens it, so the surprise never arrives.

Tickling needs a surprise you cannot supply.
  1. Step 1 of 5

Your brain sends a copy of every order it gives.

1 Order sent tothe hand2 A predictionsent inward too3 Touch arrivesexactly aspredicted

When it tells your hand to move, it also predicts exactly what that will feel like. The prediction arrives before the touch does.

  2. Step 2 of 5

    Predicted sensations get quietened.

Predicted touch Turned down — barelynoticedUnexpected touch Turned up — highlynoticeable

Matching what you expected means it is not news. Your brain subtracts it so that genuinely unexpected touches stand out.

  3. Step 3 of 5

This is why you do not feel your own clothes all day.

First moment of wearing a shirtclearly feltTen minutes laterfiltered out

The same filter removes constant, expected signals. You notice your collar only when something changes.

  4. Step 4 of 5

    Tickling depends on the surprise.

    Another person'sfingers Nothing predicted,nothing subtracted

Somebody else's fingers arrive unpredictably, so nothing is subtracted and the sensation stays at full strength — sometimes uncomfortably so.

  5. Step 5 of 5

Add a delay and it starts to work.

No delay=Prediction matches — notickleHalf-second delay Prediction fails — ittickles

In experiments, a machine that copies your hand movement half a second late does tickle. The prediction no longer matches, so the filter fails.

The same prediction system is why you can walk without feeling dizzy: your brain expects the scene to move and discounts it.

The short version

Your brain predicts the feel of your own hand and subtracts it, so tickling only works when the touch is genuinely unpredictable.

Try it yourself

Have someone hold your hand and use it to tickle you. Because you did not choose the movement, it partly works.
