Why Are Ramps Easier?
A ramp does not reduce the work. It spreads it over a longer walk.

Lifting straight up needs full force.
To raise a 50 kg barrel one metre, you must hold all 50 kg for the whole metre. Most people cannot.

A ramp splits the weight into two parts.
On a slope, gravity's pull divides: most of it presses into the ramp, and only a small part pulls the barrel back down the slope. You only fight that small part.

Gentler slope, smaller force.
A ramp four times longer than it is tall needs about a quarter of the force. A very gentle slope makes almost anything pushable.

But you push much further.
That eight-to-one ramp is eight times as long as the height you gain. Easier the whole way, but a much longer journey.

Every road up a hill is a ramp.
Mountain roads switch back and forth instead of going straight up. Wheelchair ramps, stairs and screw threads are all the same idea.
A screw is literally a ramp coiled into a spiral. That is why turning it many times drives it in a little way with huge force.

A ramp trades a shorter, harder lift for a longer, gentler push — the work done is identical.
