A brain rehearsing offline

Why Do We Dream?

During one stage of sleep the brain replays and reorganises the day while the body is switched off.

1 The body isswitched off2 The brain getsbusy again3 The day isreplayed andsorted
The quietest part of you is not resting.
  1. Step 1 of 5

    Sleep runs in repeating cycles.

    Light Deep Active90 min

Roughly every ninety minutes you pass through light sleep, deep sleep and a strange active stage. Vivid dreams cluster in that last one.

  2. Step 2 of 5

In the dreaming stage the body is locked.

Brain activity Nearly as busy as awakeMuscle activity Deliberately switchedoff

Your eyes dart about and your brain lights up almost like waking, but the muscles are switched off so you do not act out the dream.

  3. Step 3 of 5

Memories get sorted while you are away.

1 The day isrecordedroughly2 Replayed whileoffline3 Filed with whatyou alreadyknew

Fresh experiences are replayed and the useful parts are filed with older memories. People who sleep after learning remember more of it.

  4. Step 4 of 5

Dreams are strange because the fact-checker is quiet.

    The dreamStory-making —loudFact-checking— nearlysilent

The parts that ask whether something makes sense are far less active. The story-making parts carry on without anyone questioning them.

  5. Step 5 of 5

You forget most of them within minutes.

Dreams you haveseveral everynightDreams you rememberusually the lastone

The machinery that writes memories down is barely running during a dream. Only dreams you wake up inside tend to survive at all.

Everybody dreams, including people who insist they never do. They simply wake at a point where nothing was saved.

The short version

Dreams come from a busy brain replaying and filing the day while the body is locked and the fact-checking parts are switched down.

Try it yourself

Keep paper by your bed and write anything you remember the moment you wake. Recall improves fast with practice.
