Why Do We Breathe?

Breathing brings in oxygen to release energy from food, and removes the waste gas.

    Food holds energy, but releasing it requires oxygen — a slow, controlled version of burning happening in every cell.

    Each lung branches into millions of tiny sacs. Flattened out, the surface would cover most of a tennis court — inside your chest.

    The sac walls are one cell thick, with blood on the other side. Oxygen slips across and carbon dioxide crosses back the other way.

    The diaphragm flattens downward, enlarging your chest and lowering the pressure inside. Air is pushed in by the atmosphere.

    The urge to breathe is triggered by rising carbon dioxide, not falling oxygen. That is why holding your breath becomes unbearable so quickly.

    You breathe about 20,000 times a day, and almost none of them require a decision.

The short version

Breathing collects oxygen for releasing energy from food and expels carbon dioxide, and the urge comes from the waste gas.

Breathe out fully, then hold. The urgency comes much faster than after breathing in — it is the carbon dioxide, not the oxygen.
