Why Is Black Ice So Dangerous?
A film of ice thin enough to show the road through it takes away all your grip.

It forms from a very thin layer of water.
Melted snow, drizzle or condensation spreads into a film a fraction of a millimetre deep, then freezes without trapping any air bubbles.

No bubbles means no white.
Ordinary ice looks white because trapped air scatters light. Bubble-free ice is transparent, so you see straight through it to the dark road.

The road surface freezes before the air does.
A bridge or a shaded dip loses heat to the sky faster than the air around it, so ice can form there while the thermometer still reads above zero.

Ice gives a tyre almost nothing to hold.
Rubber grips by pressing into tiny roughness. Ice is smooth and its surface melts slightly under pressure, so the tyre slides on a film of water.

Which is why stopping distances explode.
On dry tarmac a car stops in a few car lengths. On black ice the same speed needs ten times the distance, and steering does almost nothing.
Bridges ice first because they lose heat from underneath as well as on top — hence the warning signs.
The short version
Black ice is bubble-free transparent ice on a cold surface, so it looks like wet road while removing nearly all grip.
Try it yourself
Freeze one tray of water straight from the tap and one that has been boiled and cooled. The boiled one is far clearer — fewer dissolved gases.
