The Bat's Nightly Hunt

In the evening, when the sun goes down,
And creatures stir without a sound,
The bat takes flight, with wings so light,
To hunt for bugs throughout the night.

It flies around, without a care,
And swoops and dives, through the air.
It searches high, it searches low,
For tasty bugs that move so slow.

It finds its prey, with a keen eye,
And captures it as it flies by.
Then off it goes, back to its cave,
To rest and eat, and be quite brave.

And when the night has come to end,
The bat will fly off once again.
But don't you worry, it will return,
For in its cave, it can still learn.

So sleep tight, my little friends,
And dream of bats and their nocturnal trends.
For when the evening turns to night,
The bat will be there, to take its flight.

Reflections

Here are a few questions you can ask kids to think about the story:

  1. What does the bat hunt for at night, and how does it find its prey?
  2. Where does the bat go after it captures a bug, and what does it do there?
  3. Why do you think the bat returns to its cave every night?
  4. How do you think the bat feels when it flies through the night and catches its prey?
  5. What can we learn from the bat about being brave and taking care of ourselves?
