Read together
In the farmstead green and wide,
There stands a farmhouse, a place to reside,
With windows that shine in the morning light,
And a big red door, oh what a sight!
In the backyard there's a pen,
Where the pigs and goats roam, now and then,
And a corral, where horses gallop and play,
Oh, what a sight to see them sway!
In the orchard, there are trees,
With fruits that sway in the gentle breeze,
Apples, pears, and peaches ripe,
Oh, they taste so sweet, what a delightful type!
Next to the orchard stands a shed,
Where the tools and equipment are kept instead,
And a barn, where the cows and chickens stay,
And a hayloft, where they jump and play!
In the farmstead green and wide,
There's a place where animals reside,
And a farmhouse, where families stay,
Oh, what a sight, in every way!
Talk about it
Reflection
Here are some questions that can be asked to encourage kids to think about "A Day at the Farmstead":
- What kind of animals did the family encounter at the farmstead, and which one was your favorite?
- How many different structures did the family explore on the property, and what were they used for?
- Why do you think farms are important, and what kind of work do farmers do?
- Have you ever visited a farm or seen animals up close like the family in the story? What was it like?
- What would you do if you lived on a farmstead, and what kind of animals would you like to have?
