Read together
In the land of coins and money,
There's a world of treasure so funny,
Where every penny has a tale to tell,
And every coin has its own spell.
The penny, or cent as some may say,
Has an obverse and reverse on display,
On one side, a portrait so bright,
On the other, a symbol of might.
When the mint strikes a coin so true,
It leaves the blank with a design anew,
A relief that's smooth and raised so high,
A picture that catches every eye.
The headdress on some coins you'll see,
A crown or feathers so grand and free,
It tells a story of people past,
Of heroes and leaders that always last.
So take a look at your pocket change,
And see the treasure that's so strange,
With every coin, a story told,
Of the people and places so bold.
Talk about it
Reflection
- What is a cent, and what are some of the things you can buy with it?
- What is a mint, and what does it do to make coins?
- Why do some coins have headdresses or other symbols on them?
- What is the difference between the obverse and reverse of a coin?
- How do you think people in the past used coins, and what stories do you think their coins might tell?
