The Fight for Equality: How Brave People Changed the World

There once was a time, long ago
When not everyone had the chance to grow
Some were told they couldn't succeed
Because of things like the color of their skin or the shape of their knees

But brave people fought to make things right
They stood up for what they knew was their right
They talked about things like civil rights and the law
And how everyone deserved an equal opportunity to stand tall

They talked about the Constitution, so important and true
It said that every person had rights, yes, even you!
It said that discrimination had no place
And that every person had the chance to achieve with grace

So now we live in a world that's legal and fair
Where everyone has a chance to do and to dare
Thanks to those who fought for what was right
We can all achieve and shine bright.

Reflections

Here are a few questions to ask kids to think about the story:

  1. What does "civil rights" mean, and why are they important?
  2. Who were some of the brave people who fought for civil rights and helped to end discrimination?
  3. What is the Constitution, and why is it important?
  4. What are some examples of ways that people can work to make the world a fair and equal place?
  5. How can we all help to continue the work that has been done to create a legal and fair society where everyone has an opportunity to achieve?
