Flags on the Blanket

At a club picnic, children notice blends in the scene — a black blanket, a clock, a broom, and a bright flag by the globe.

Read together

The club picnic began on a black blanket under a clock hung from a tree. Someone
swept crumbs with a broom while a bride-to-be laughed at a crab drawn in chalk.
Parents poured juice and called children back to the shade.

A crocodile toy guarded the snacks. A fly buzzed past a flag that snapped in the
wind. A globe sat on a glass tray beside cold drinks. Children traced blends with
a finger: bl in blanket and black, cl in clock and club, br in broom and bride,
cr in crab and crocodile, fl in fly and flag, gl in globe and glass.

They said each pair aloud, then raced to find the next object. Learning hid inside
the picnic, quiet as a flag at rest when the wind paused — and loud again when
the breeze returned.
