Read together

Once upon a time, on a sunny day,
A little dicky bird flew away.
He met a friend on a grassy hill,
And they played together with such thrill.

The dicky bird said, "Let's play a game,
I'll fly away and you do the same,
Then we'll come back and have some fun,
And play together 'til the day is done."

So the little bird flew far away,
And his friend decided to stay,
But when it was time to come back,
He realized he didn't know the track.

The dicky bird saw his friend's distress,
And flew to him with great finesse,
"Don't worry, friend, just follow me,
And we'll fly back together, you'll see."

So they flew back to the grassy hill,
Where they played and sang with such thrill,
And from that day, they knew the way,
To fly together and never stray.

So if you ever get lost, just say,
"I need my friend to show the way,"
And like the dicky bird and his friend,
You'll find your way back home again.

Talk about it

Reflection

Here are a few questions to ask kids to think about the story:

  1. What game did the dicky bird and his friend play?
  2. How did the dicky bird help his friend when he got lost?
  3. What did the dicky bird and his friend learn from their experience?
  4. Why is it important to have friends who can help us when we need it?
  5. Can you think of a time when a friend helped you find your way back?
