Rounding to the nearest 1000 uses the hundreds digit. 0–4 in the hundreds column means round down; 5–9 means round up. 2,450 rounds to 2,000; 2,550 rounds to 3,000. At 2,500 you are exactly halfway; convention is to round up to 3,000. Place-value charts keep digits aligned so children see which column decides. This skill supports estimating with four-digit numbers in measures and data. It extends the same rule used for tens and hundreds — only the deciding column moves left.
Worked example
Round 2,847 to the nearest 1000. The hundreds digit is 8, which is 5 or more, so round up. 2,847 → 3,000. The 847 is closer to 1000 than to 0.
Watch for this
Changing the wrong digit — writing 2,947 or 3,847 instead of 3,000 — means trailing digits were edited instead of zeroed. After rounding, everything right of the thousands becomes 0.
