What Are Whiskers For?
A cat's whiskers are not for stroking. They are a measuring instrument wired straight into the brain.

The hair itself feels nothing.
A whisker is dead material, like the rest of a hair. What it does is act as a lever: a tiny movement at the tip becomes a big movement where it is rooted.

The roots are extraordinarily well supplied.
And every whisker gets a patch of brain to itself as well Each whisker sits in a follicle wrapped in blood and packed with nerve endings — far more than ordinary skin — and each has its own patch of brain devoted to it.

They measure gaps.
A cat's whiskers span roughly its own width, so brushing both sides of a gap says it will not fit. In the dark that is the difference between passing and getting stuck.

They also read the air.
Whiskers pick up the faint air movement made by something moving nearby. A seal can track a fish's wake with its whiskers minutes after the fish has gone.

They can be aimed.
Many animals sweep their whiskers back and forth several times a second, building up a picture of a surface by touch the way you would run a hand over it.
A seal's whiskers are wavy rather than straight, which stops them wobbling in its own wake and drowning out the signal it is listening for.

Rest a long dry grass stem on your finger and touch the far tip. You feel it clearly — that is the lever a whisker uses.
