It depends on who does the delivering

Is Venom the Same as Poison?

If it bites you and you feel ill, that is venom. If you bite it and feel ill, that is poison.

Venom It puts the chemicalinto youPoison You have to take it inyourself
Same chemicals. Completely different delivery.
  1. Step 1 of 5

    Venom needs a delivery system.

A gland that makes thevenomA muscle that squeezesit outA hollow fang, sting orbarbAnd something to aim itat

A venomous animal has hardware: fangs, a sting, a spine or a barb, plus a gland to make the venom and a muscle to squeeze it down the tube.

  2. Step 2 of 5

    Poison just sits there.

1 The poison sitsin the skin2 Bright colourswarn everythingoff3 It never has tobe used

A poisonous animal has no hardware. Its defence is in its skin or its flesh, and it only works on something that has already bitten it — which is why poisonous animals are so often brightly coloured.

  3. Step 3 of 5

Most venom is for eating, not defence.

On prey Stops it and starts thedigestionOn you A last resort — venomis expensive

A spider or a snake mostly uses venom to stop a meal escaping and to start digesting it. Defending itself is the second job, and many would rather retreat than spend the venom.

  4. Step 4 of 5

It is a mixture, not one thing.

Nerve-jamming partsstop themuscles workingTissue-breaking partsstart thedigestion earlyBlood-thinning partsstop theclotting

Venom is dozens of different chemicals at once. Some jam the nerves, some break down flesh, some stop blood clotting — which is why one antidote does not work for another animal.

  5. Step 5 of 5

Some of it ends up as medicine.

1 A venom part isidentified2 It is isolatedand studied3 It becomes aheart medicine

A chemical good at jamming one exact thing in the body is useful if that is the thing you want jammed. Blood-pressure drugs, painkillers and clot treatments have all come out of venom.

A pufferfish is poisonous, not venomous. A jellyfish is venomous — the stinging cells inject. A poison dart frog is, as the name says, poisonous.

The short version

Venom is injected by the animal; poison only harms whatever eats or touches it. Both are mixtures of many chemicals.

Try it yourself

Sort these into two piles: bee, pufferfish, jellyfish, poison dart frog, rattlesnake. Which ones do the delivering?
