The bit left over

What Is a Remainder?

When a total will not split evenly, the bit left over is the remainder.

10 ÷ 3 = 3 remainder 110 counters Starting total GROUP 1 GROUP 2 GROUP 3 3 full groups of 31 left over
Three full groups. One counter left over.
  1. Step 1 of 5

Every group is the same size.

10 counters to shareGroup size: 3

Ten counters, three to a group. The group size says when a group is full.

  2. Step 2 of 5

    Fill groups until you cannot.

    1 Group 13 in2 Group 23 in3 Group 33 in41 leftNot enough

Three groups fill up. One counter is left, and one cannot make a fourth group.

  3. Step 3 of 5

The leftover is smaller than the group.

    Group sizethree neededRemainderone left

If three counters were left over, they would simply make another whole group.

  4. Step 4 of 5

Groups plus leftover rebuild the total.

    3 × 3 = 9 ingroups+ 1 left over= 10 total

Nine counters in groups, one left over, back to ten. That checks the answer.

  5. Step 5 of 5

    Sometimes nothing is left over.

    9 ÷ 30Remainder 0 — sharesperfectly10 ÷ 31Remainder 1 — one left

Nine counters into groups of three leaves nothing. Then the remainder is zero.

365 ÷ 7 = 52 remainder 1. That one extra day is why your birthday lands on a new weekday each year.

The short version

A remainder is what is left when no more equal groups can be made.
