A net, not a bag

What Is a Pelican's Pouch For?

It is not a lunchbox. It is a scoop that catches a fish along with a lot of water it has to get rid of.

Catching is the easy part. Draining is the work.
  1. Step 1 of 5

Catching a fish by grabbing at it hardly ever works.

A narrow beak Must be aimedpreciselyA wide scoop Catches whatever isin the area

A fish darts sideways the instant something comes at it. A narrow beak has to be aimed exactly, and it usually misses.

  2. Step 2 of 5

So the pelican takes the water as well.

A scooping beak A bag holding far morethan the bird couldswallow

The lower beak spreads wide and the skin between it opens into a bag. It scoops fish and sea together and closes on the lot.

  3. Step 3 of 5

That is a great deal of water to be holding.

The pouch, fullAbout 11 litresof waterThe stomachHolds far less

A full pouch takes about eleven litres — nearly three times what the pelican's own stomach could ever hold. It cannot swallow that.

  4. Step 4 of 5

So it squeezes the water out first.

1 Tip the beakdown2 Squeeze thepouch flat3 Water out, fish still in

It tips the beak down and presses the pouch against its chest. The water runs out at the edges over about a minute, and the fish stay inside.

  5. Step 5 of 5

The pouch does a few other jobs too.

A net for catchingA strainer fordrainingA radiator forcoolingA bucket for thechicks

It is thin and full of blood vessels, so fluttering it in the heat cools the bird down. Parents also carry water in it for chicks.

Other birds know exactly what a full pouch means. Gulls will stand on a pelican's head and try to steal from it while it drains.

The short version

A pelican's pouch is a scoop that catches fish along with litres of water, which it must squeeze out before it can swallow anything.

Try it yourself

Try catching a floating pea in a cup of water, then pour the water off. Scooping wide and draining is far easier than pinching at it.
