Numbers as places

What Is a Number Line?

Put numbers on a line and adding becomes walking. Everything gets easier.

1 Numbers inorder along aline2 Adding isstepping right3 Subtracting isstepping left
Distance and direction do all the work.
  1. Step 1 of 5

Numbers get a position instead of just a name.

A line with equalmarks3Each number has exactlyone home

Mark 0, then equal steps for 1, 2, 3 and on. Every number now has one place on the line, and the order is visible at a glance.

  2. Step 2 of 5

    Adding is moving right.

    1 Start at 42 Three stepsright3=Land on 7

Start at 4 and add 3 by taking three steps right, landing on 7. The sum becomes a journey you can point at.

  3. Step 3 of 5

    Subtracting is moving left.

    Add Move rightSubtract Move left

From 7, three steps left brings you back to 4. Adding and subtracting are the same walk in opposite directions.

  4. Step 4 of 5

    It makes negative numbers obvious.

    Positive numbers — right ofzero3, 4, 5…Zero — the middletheoriginNegative numbers — left ofzero−1, −2,−3…

The line does not have to stop at zero. Keep stepping left and you get −1, −2, −3 — real positions, not strange ideas.

  5. Step 5 of 5

And it has room for everything in between.

Whole numbers only Stepping stonesThe full line Every fraction anddecimal has a place

Between 0 and 1 sit halves, thirds and every decimal. The line is not just stepping stones — it is completely filled in.

Thermometers, rulers, timelines and volume sliders are all number lines you use without thinking about it.

The short version

A number line turns numbers into positions, so arithmetic becomes stepping left and right.

Try it yourself

Draw a line, mark 0 to 10, and do 7 − 4 by walking your finger. The answer stops being abstract.
