No plumbing, no height

Why Is Moss Always Small?

Moss never grew tall because it has no pipes. Every drop of water has to soak from cell to cell.

Height is a plumbing problem, and moss never solved it.
  1. Step 1 of 5

A tall plant is mostly plumbing.

A trunk Bundles of tiny tubesrunning up it

Inside a stem are bundles of tiny tubes carrying water up from the roots. Without them, nothing above ankle height could stay wet.

  2. Step 2 of 5

    Moss has none of that.

No water tubesNo true roots — onlygrippersNo woody stemNothing to hold itupright

It has no tubes and no true roots. The little threads underneath only grip the surface — they do not drink.

  3. Step 3 of 5

So it drinks through its whole surface, like a cloth.

Rain lands on thesurface Soaks ineverywhere atonce

Rain and dew soak straight into the leaves, which are often a single cell thick. Water then passes slowly from cell to cell.

  4. Step 4 of 5

That only works over a very short distance.

How far soaking works wellA fewmillimetresHow far pipes workTens of metres

Soaking is quick across a millimetre and hopeless across a metre. A moss the height of a bush would die of thirst at the top.

  5. Step 5 of 5

Which is why moss lives where it is shady and wet.

Damp and green Dries out, goesbrown and crisp Rain returns —green again inminutes

North-facing walls, stream banks, damp bark and the gaps in paving. When it does dry out it does not die — it shuts down and waits for rain.

Moss makes spores rather than seeds, and the spores ride up on little stalks so the wind can catch them.

The short version

Moss stays small because it has no pipes to lift water — it soaks water in through its whole surface, and soaking only works over millimetres.

Try it yourself

Dip one corner of a paper towel in water and watch how far the wet edge climbs before it stops. That is the height limit moss lives with.
