What Is a Liver For?
Everything you absorb goes to the liver first, and it decides what to store, rebuild, or make safe.

Blood from the gut does not go straight round the body.
It is routed to the liver first. Nothing you absorb reaches your heart or brain until the liver has had a look at it.

It keeps your blood sugar steady.
After a meal it packs surplus sugar away in chains. Hours later, when nothing is arriving, it takes those chains apart and releases sugar again.

It takes dangerous things apart.
Alcohol, medicines and the by-products of your own chemistry are all rebuilt into something the kidneys can safely dump. That takes time, which cannot be hurried.

It makes the soap that lets you digest fat.
The liver makes bile, stores it in the gall bladder, and squirts it into the gut when fat arrives — breaking the fat into droplets small enough to absorb.

It is the only organ that grows back.
Take most of a liver away and the rest expands until the original size is restored — two-thirds can go and grow back within a couple of months. No other large organ in you will do that.
A liver carries out several hundred distinct chemical jobs, which is why no machine has ever fully replaced one the way dialysis replaces a kidney.

Try it yourself
Shake oil and water in a jar, then add a drop of washing-up liquid and shake again. The oil breaks into droplets. That is what bile does.
