Why Do Birds Have Feathers?
A feather is a branching structure that zips itself into a light, stiff, repairable sheet.

A feather is a shaft with branches on branches.
Off the central shaft come rows of barbs, and off each barb come tiny hooked branchlets that grip the neighbouring barb.

Hooks make it repairable.
When a feather splits, the bird runs it through its beak and the hooks re-engage. Nothing has to grow back. Preening is maintenance.

Flight needs a sheet that is stiff and almost weightless.
The shaft is hollow and the sheet is mostly air held in place by hooks. A wing can push hard against air while weighing very little.

Fluffy feathers do the opposite job.
Down feathers have no hooks at all, so they stay tangled and loose, trapping still air near the skin. Different structure, different job.

Colour and shape talk as well.
Some feathers exist only to be seen, and some make noise. Owls go further and use fringed edges to fly almost silently.
Feathers appeared on dinosaurs long before flight did, most likely for warmth and display first.
