Why Are Empty Rooms So Echoey?
Furniture absorbs sound. An empty room reflects it over and over instead.

Sound bounces around a room many times.
A single word reflects off walls, floor and ceiling dozens of times before it fades. You hear the direct sound plus all of that.

Soft things absorb; hard things reflect.
Sofas, curtains and carpet convert sound energy into a tiny amount of heat inside their fibres. Plaster and glass simply send it back.

Empty means every bounce survives.
With nothing absorbing, sound keeps reflecting for far longer. That lingering tail is reverberation, and it is what makes speech muddy.

This is not quite an echo.
The reflections arrive too fast to be heard separately, so they smear together rather than repeating. Echo is one late copy; this is many overlapping ones.

Concert halls keep some reverberation for warmth; recording studios kill it with soft panels. Both are deliberate choices about absorption.
Some anechoic chambers absorb so completely that people find the silence disorienting after a few minutes.
