What Does Doubling Mean?

Doubling is adding a number to itself — and it grows faster than anyone expects.

The simplest way to grow a number.

    Double means two of the same.

    Adding 2+3 becomes 5, 7 becomes9Doubling 3 becomes 6, 7 becomes14

    Double three is three plus three. Double seven is seven plus seven. You are not adding a fixed amount — you are adding a copy.

    Doubles are the easiest sums to remember.

    Most children learn double facts before other addition. 4+4, 6+6, 8+8 stick fast because both halves look the same.

    They help with sums that are nearly doubles.

    1 6 + 6 = 122+One more336 + 7 = 13

    6 + 7 is hard to recall, but 6 + 6 = 12 is easy, and 7 is one more. So the answer is 13. This shortcut is called near doubles.

  4. Step 4 of 5

    Halving is doubling backwards.

    Double 8 → 16Halve 16 → 8

    If double 8 is 16, then half of 16 is 8. Learning doubles gives you halves for free — they are the same fact read two ways.

    Repeated doubling explodes.

    Double 1 ten times and you reach 1,024. Double it thirty times and you pass a billion. Nothing in ordinary life grows like this.

    A folded sheet of paper doubles in thickness each fold. Forty-two folds would reach the Moon — if you could fold it.
